A staff member writes: Benefield, renamed Mama, is a spunky adult who had no luck in the intake department. Neither name suits her. Instead I would call her Hershey, like the candy bar. Her head is a perfect square of dark chocolate too small for the soft, slightly plump 35 pounds defining her equally as scrumptious body. She is an interesting, compact mix of Shepard, terrier, and mini Rottie. In her kennel she presents as a feisty, cranky lady barking and carrying on at the dogs around her as well as the friendly handlers who try to approach. But the tough act vanishes as soon as the door to her kennel is opened and she and her human companion make their way outdoors. Mama is happy to accompany whomever she just dressed down. No hard feelings. She does her business immediately and surveys the scene. This thoughtful lady is an excellent example of a small dog who feels the need to act big and bold in a situation over which she has no control. But she picks up on things quickly. Initially standoffish and shy of contact, Mama has warmed up considerably now that she knows the routine. Come to find out, she's a tail wagger and a butt wiggler, appreciative of contact, but not too needy. Mama enjoys the simple pleasures of a walk in the park. On leash, she is easy to handle and responsive to commands. She may be a bit selective when it comes to dogs, but that is not yet definitive. Generally speaking, Mama is quite low maintenance and has the right combination of size, breed, and demeanor to make an excellent apartment resident. She would be a sweet addition to a family with or without older kids searching for a seasoned best friend.
