Gorgeous german shepherd Duke in danger@NYC kill shelter in Manhattan, New York

Duke was surrendered to ACC after 4 years due to 'allergies'. He is very protective of his handler and may lunge or growl at strangers, also he has shown signs of food guarding. Here are his surrender notes:
Duke's owner's favorite things about him are that he's very friendly and likes to cuddle. He is high activity and his owner's describe him as a big puppy. He loves the outdoors. He lived in rural PA for 4 years and is nervous in NYC. He likes to sneak under owners' arms while they're sitting and rest his head on their laps, giving them "hugs." He loves to be cuddled, kissed, and hugged. Duke is very protective of his family and will growl at strangers if they get close to them. He is wonderful with his family as well as extended amily and friends that he sees regularly. He follows them around the house. Duke likes to play fetch and chase with the children. He loves giant bones and basketballs. HABITS Duke spent half of his time outside on a chain and half inside with his family. He sleeps anywhere. He eats dry and canned Pedigree. He is used to slow and brisk walks for exercise as well as running around the yard on his long chain. TRAINING Duke is housetrained and doesn't have accidents. He knows sit, stay, calm down, and go to corner. He was crate trained as a puppy. Duke is well-behaved alone in the yard. He's well-behaved in the house and doesn't chew anything, but he is never left inside alone. Off the leash he wanders but comes when called. BEHAVIOR Duke loves baths and being brushed. He isn't bothered when his owners take his food, bones, or toys, but he would snap at a stranger. He doesn't mind beind moved off furniture, held/restrained, or woken up. He barks when strangers approach the house to alert his owner and growl when they approach the family.

I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 07/30/2014 from NY 10465, owner surrender reason stated was ALLERGIES.

This dog is in danger of being placed on the euthanasia list, so time is of the essence. If you can help do not wait, contact a rescue group now
