A volunteer writes:
Jack has seen many years, celebrated many birthdays with his family. absorbed lots of tears when they cried in his coat, laughed along with them during the happy times, and kept them warm on cold winter nights. Then he got old, got arthritis, has trouble walking and needs them more than ever. But, is he curled up alongside those he loves? No, he's in a metal cage, surrounded by strangers, smells, noise, lights, barking dogs....nothing that's familiar. His family didn't want him anymore because he was too much work. Jack has a big sign on his cage "Do not walk - check with medical". I was told his arthritis is bad, it hurts him to walk, he'll walk a few steps then sit down to rest. Jack stood up when I opened his gate, his tail wagged and I easily slipped my leash over his head. He stepped down out of his kennel gently and we slowly walked to the elevator. Downstairs he sat down to rest for a few moments and then we continued outside. His tail never stopped wagging. Once outside he sniffed around a bit, took care of his business, and then lay down clearly worn out from the effort. We sat together chatting until Jack felt strong enough to stand up. He needs to be lifted back into his kennel as his back legs don't work well enough, and once inside lay down again to rest. He's old, he's tired, and he's sore, but he's also a nice dog who should be sleeping on a soft bed in a quiet place for whatever time he has left.

I've met and spent time with Jack. I love love love this sweet gentle giant. Yes he's got issues with his legs needing help to get back into the kennel. He deserves a home and a large bed or tempurpedic bed to lay on. He deserves a true loving family who will stick it out with him until the end. I love love love this boy. I pray someone opens up their heart and home to him for whatever time he has left. He shouldn't be in a shelter kennel
