Bulgarian Pottery from Troyan, a town at the foothills of the Balkan Mountains. is one of the oldest crafts in Bulgaria, dating back 3000 years to the Thracians. Thrown, pained and glazed by hand, Troyan pottery is considered the true Bulgarian pottery and its style began to evolve in the 19th century based on Thracian and Slavic designs. It is unique due to the red color of clay from the region and the design. Traditionally painted by the village women, each having her signature design, applying yellow, brown and green paint with a bull"s horns and feathers or smeared paint with their fingertips to achieve the whimsical effects. It has appeared in Vogue, Gourmet Magazine, Elle Décor, and others. While some workshops have started up again, for many years it was thought that this art might disappear with the introduction of goods from Asia. These vessels are vintage from Bulgaria in the 1970s. Set of 4. One has small chip on rim that can be seen in the last photo
