Antique Japanese Kesa in Manhattan, New York

Antique Japanese Kesa
Price: $950
Type: Art & Antiques, For Sale

This beautiful antique Japanese kesa is comprised of quality silk brocade squares, fitted together to form a cloth that was traditionally used as an altar cloth or as a cloak for Buddhist priests/monks. Wealthy patrons often donated their best silk fabric to the temples for this use; the patchwork is to make the wearer humble. This lovely piece is in very good condition for its age with only several small ink stains. The work on this kesa is amazing and the colors are rich and pick up light. It's generous size would make a magnificent wall hanging, bed topper or folded as a table runner. I have seen pillows made from kesa cloth that sold for $2,300 each. The reverse side is purple silk and is in excellent condition. Sotheby?s dated this from late 18th/early 19th century, from the late Meiji (1868-1912). The dimensions: 78? long and 45? wide.
