Sony DVDirect VRD-VC20 lets you accomplish both of these chores without the need to connect to a computer. This second-generation model makes significant improvements to the original, the Sony DVDirect VRD-VC10, adding digital support (DV/FireWire port) as well as support for 16X DVD-R and 6X DVD-RW speeds and for +RW and +R in standalone mode. Oh, and did we mention that it's also very easy to use?
The VRD-VC20 looks like any external optical drive. The front panel has a digital display that tells you how much recording time you have left on your DVD. The Rec, Play, and Stop controls are straightforward and easy to use when transferring video. The Recording button lets you choose between three quality modes (HP, 1 hour; SP, 2 hours; SLP, 6 hours) for single-layer DVDs and double the recording times when using dual-layer (DL) media.
On the back of the unit, you have a host of connectivity options, including a DV port (not found on the earlier version), S-Video-in, Composite-in (yellow, red, white), and USB 2.0. The included USB 2.0 cable lets you connect the drive to your PC. Transferring video is as simple as connecting the appropriate cables, pressing Play on the camcorder or VCR, and then pressing Record on the box.
